What it checks
Each line of each subtitle is searched for the characters listed by the profile. A line containing at least one of them produces one issue, which names every forbidden character found on that line.
How it is measured
- The search is an exact match on the visible text of the line, styling ignored.
- Each listed entry is searched as written. An entry can be a single character (
♪) or a short sequence. - Visually similar characters are distinct:
"(U+0022) is not“(U+201C). - A profile can declare the rule several times, for example once per group of forbidden characters.
Parameters
| Parameter | Type | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
characters |
list of strings | Characters or sequences that must not appear |
Example
With characters: ["♪", "#"], the line ♪ Happy birthday ♪ is reported as Line 1 contains forbidden character(s): ♪.
How to fix
- Replace the character with the destination's accepted convention. Music is often marked with an italic lyric or a label, but check the specification.
- Look for invisible substitutions introduced by an authoring tool or an encoding conversion, such as typographic quotes, ellipsis characters or non-breaking symbols.
